Selling a used car is a task in itself; the complexity of the same gets multiplied if you end up with a damaged RC (registration certificate) Don’t worry! We are here to ease your pain by sharing the precise steps to be followed if you happen to fall in this category.

To begin with – what is an RC? Registration certificate (RC) is the identity of your vehicle which contains all the vital information related to your car such as the chassis number, make, model, colour, date of manufacture etc. If your RC has any misprints, defects that make the contents illegible, or the same is lost – until you get a duplicate RC made, you will not be able to legally sell and transfer your car’s ownership.

Let’s have a look at an RC and what all the inscriptions represent:

Registration Certificate (RC)

Selling a car with a damaged RC is a two-step process. First, you need to procure the documents that are needed to sell a car. Secondly, you need to collect a specific form (FORM 26) which is needed to get a new RC. This might sound like an easy thing but, it takes quite a while to finish the whole process. Do check out our blog post on how to apply for a duplicate RC.

Cases In Which A New RC Is Required

If the seller’s details on the RC contain factual inconsistency

At the time of reselling your car, if your (seller’s) details are misprinted on the RC, then you need to submit an affidavit stating your correct details along with an ID proof. However, if you need a new RC then, it is required of you to fill FORM 26 and submit it along with the other documents.

If the car’s details are not printed correctly on the RC

If the car’s details are misprinted on an RC then, a copy of the original invoice of the car needs to be submitted along with other documents when you plan to sell the car. Similar to the above case, if you need a new RC then, submit a duly filled FORM 26 to get your hands on a new RC. Two copies of FORM 26 are required for this process.

If the RC is damaged

If your RC suffered a damage, you will need to procure FORM 26 from the RTO. This document needs to be duly filled in and submitted in duplicate (two copies).

If RC is lost

In case you have lost your RC, it is needed of you to file a FIR (first information report) and submit a copy of the FIR along with FORM 26. If you are based in Delhi and don not have time to pay a visit to the station, you can also procure your FIR online.

Two duly filled copies of FORM 26 are required to be submitted along with the other documents when you plan to sell a car with damaged RC.

As you might have figured out by now that the whole process can be quite cumbersome. It is assured that majority of the buyers will not be willing to buy your car with a damaged RC. Chances are high that they will ask you to provide a replacement of the same. With the state of the RTO offices in India – the endless waiting hours required to submit your forms and get the necessary paperwork done – one must be ready for a long battle.
